Doris Long

Doris Morgan Long, 84, passed away with her family by her side, Saturday, August 27, 2016, in her home in Columbus, MS. She was born November 15, 1931, in Meridian, MS, at The Anderson Infirmary, and was delivered by her great uncle Dr. Jeff Anderson. She was born to Frank E. and Maggie Mable Morgan. Her father was a farmer and her mother a loving housewife. Doris graduated from Lauderdale High School in 1949. She also graduated from East Mississippi Community College in 1951, where she competed athletically in college basketball. She was married to her husband of 62 years Benjamin Edwin Long on November 23, 1950. In addition to raising 5 children, she worked 16 years of dedicated service as a zone manager for Lewis Groceries retiring from that organization. Mrs. Long’s childhood church was Lauderdale United Methodist in Lauderdale, MS, and she joined Wesley United Methodist Church in 1950. She has been a lifelong member of Wesley for 65 years, and this church family played a central role in her Christian life as a person and as a mother. Mrs. Long was also active in her community and particularly enjoyed her participation in Contact Helpline for 16 years and Meals on Wheels for 3 years. She was a member of the Columbus Music Study Club and was active in the ‘Keenagers’ Luncheon Club at FUMC. She was a member of The Supper Club with loving friends for 10 years and Circle II at Wesley United Methodist for 50 years serving in numerous capacities. Her passions included leading her family in a Christian life, supporting her children and grandchildren in school and sports, cooking and watching her family grow with grandchildren and great-grandchildren to the large number that it is today. Her true passion was being with her family and friends. She was happiest when all her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were together celebrating holidays, birthdays or just at her house for a visit. Through the years, she remained at the center of her family with her constant love, affection, and guiding example. Doris is survived by her loving brother Ralph Morgan (Lib); 4 sons, Stan Long (Angela), Doug Long (Sande), Larry Long (Dawn), Paul Long (Susie), and daughter, Suzanne Hill (Ricky Adams); 16 grandchildren, Amy Long (Dana), Andy Long, Kevin Long (Pam), Sarah Long, Lindsay Strider (Trey), Matthew Long (Lindsey), Amber Vandevender, Spencer Long (Alexia), Brittany Long, Preston Long, Loghan Laufenberg, Montana Rish, Alaina Hill, Talyn Laufenberg, Landon Hill, and Karsyn Laufenberg; 10 great-grandchildren, Kinsey Long, Brady Long, Tripp Strider, Anna-Whitten Long, Landrey Strider, Parker Long, Aria Long, Kyzer Long, McCoy Strider, Noah Long; nephew Johnny Ralph Morgan (Tonya) and their children Blane Morgan and Shelby Morgan. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Mable Morgan and her loving husband of 62 years Benjamin Edwin Long. Visitation will begin at 11:00 AM with a memorial service to follow at 12:00 Noon, on Saturday, September 3, 2016, at Wesley United Methodist Church in Columbus, MS. The memorial service will be conducted by Brother Diane Lemmon. Lowndes Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
