James Arthur Mattison, age 93, died Friday, July 13, 2018 at, Baptist Memorial Hospital Columbus. Services will be held Tuesday, July 17, 2018 at 6:00 PM at Memorial Gunter Peel Chapel, 2nd Avenue North with Rev. John Gainer officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service at the funeral home. Burial will take place Wednesday at Memorial Gardens of Columbus. Mr. Mattison was born on Thursday, August 14, 1924, in Alabama, to the late Sylvester and Vera Freeman Long. He was a member and past deacon of Friendship Baptist Church. Mr. Mattison worked until age 89 with many of those years spent as a security officer. In his early years, he enjoyed racing go-carts and sprint cars. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Pickens Mattison; his daughter, Betty Mae Ledsworth and her husband, Frankie; his sister, Mildred Stanford; his brother, Jack Mattison; and his adoptive parents, Malcolm Franklin and Marie Horst Mattison. Survivors include his grandsons, Dino Calahan, Smyrna, GA and Denny Calahan, Columbus, MS; great- grandchildren, Kristen Higgins (Ric), Steens, MS and Dustin Calahan, LA; great-great-grandchildren, Mattison Elizabeth, Katie Marie, Dawson Riley and Malorie Ann; extended family, Ruth Ann Faris, Sarah Brummett and Terrie Calahan. The honorary pallbearers will be Denny Calahan, Ric Higgins, Charles Slayton and the deacons of Friendship Baptist Church. The Mattison family would like to thank the staff of Trinity Personal Care for the loving care and concern shown to Mr. Mattison.
