COLUMBUS — Helen “Mitchell” Kelley, 85, died Sept. 10, 2018, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle. Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Southside M.B. Church. Burial will follow at Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 11-6 p.m. at Lee-Sykes Funeral Home. Lee-Sykes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Kelley was born Sept. 17, 1932, in Columbus, to the late Enoch and Blanche Mitchell. She was a graduate of Hunt High School and Jackson State University in Jackson. She was formerly employed as a teacher with Crawford Elementary and Columbus Public Schools of Motley, Coleman, Franklin and Hughes Elementary Schools. She was also employed with the Boys and Girls Club of Columbus/Lowndes County. She served as a volunteer for Community Counseling Services Alcohol and Drug Division and as Dean of Women at Mary Holmes College. She was a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and Armstrong M.B. Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Willie Mitchell, Vera Blount, James Mitchell and Betty Hooks. She is survived by her husband, Willie R. Kelley; children, MesaZatie Kelley of Duluth, Georgia, and Marchete Kelley-Cole of Orlando, Florida; siblings, Marie Davis of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Emma Trass of Memphis, Tennessee and Walter Mitchell of Columbus; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
