COLUMBUS — Diane Hardy “Tiny” Thompson, 64, died Feb. 4, 2013, at the Augusta Burn Center in Augusta, Ga. Services are Sunday at 2 p.m. at Mt. Zion MB Church with Jessie Slater officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Gardens. Visitation is Saturday from 3-4 p.m. at Lee-Sykes Chapel. Ms. Thompson was born July 21, 1948, to Lillie Viola Spann Hardy and the late Jesse Hardy Jr. She was a member of Mt. Zion MB Church. She was employed as an assistant teacher at Hughes Elementary School for 17 years, Sear for 15 years and as a teacher at West Lowndes Middle School for 14 years. She received the Oasis Award Jan. 21, 2013 for being one of three African American women to integrate Mississippi University for Women. In addition to her mother, survivors include her daughter, Karen Thompson McKinstry; sisters, Margie Morris of Mansfield, Ohio, Betty Williams of Tucker, Ga., and Shirley Ann Hardy of Lithonia, Ga.; brothers, Larry Hardy and Tyrone Hardy, both of Columbus; and one grandchild. Pallbearers are Christopher Butler, Timothy James Guin, Steven McKinstry, and members of JROTC of West Lowndes High School.
