VERNON, Ala. — J. A. Shackelford, 85, died Feb. 18, 2013, at his residence. Services are Thursday at 11 a.m. at Vernon Full Gospel Worship Center with Bro. James Godsey officiating. Military honor graveside service and burial will follow in Fellowship Cemetery. Visitation is Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at Otts Funeral Home. Mr. Shackelford was born Sept. 13, 1927, in Columbus, to the late James Allen and Edna Lenora Thomas Shackelford. He served in the U.S. Army and was a U.S. Air Force retiree. He also retired from Emerson as a machinist. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Laura Kathleen Taylor Shackelford; daughter, Lenora Shackelford; one grandchild, one great-grandchild, six brothers and four sisters. He is survived by his sons, Clifton Shackelford of Vernon, Lee Shackelford of Hamilton, Ala., and James Doyle Shackelford of Nauvoo, Ala.; stepson, Terry Pennington of Vernon; daughter, Peggie Merchant of Vernon; stepdaughters, Kathy Glasgow of Corinth, Rena Robinson and Carol Lockhart, both of Vernon; 16 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Randy Lockhart, Steve Lockhart, Johnny Boone, Delbert Vice, Ton Goodwin and Steve Madison.
