Raymond Gross: What Obama tax cuts?

Remember Obama steady bragging about not extending all those bad "Bush" tax cuts if he became president which would have increased everyone''s income tax in 2011? Remember all the national panic and melancholy about four months ago when he was still saying the same thing? Then after the November election how he started changing his tune? Remember how he quickly began claiming the "Bush" tax cuts as his very own "Obama " tax cuts? And how everyone became so relieved and happy that the income tax would no longer increase in 2011 after the big compromise deal for everything to remain the same? Well, I''m going to burst your bubble. It''s been said that when Obama is sweetly waving at us with one he is stabbing us in the back with the other hand.

Now what the other hand was doing this time showed up in my mail yesterday. It was a notice from retired military pay saying that my fed withholding was being increased. Somehow the sly Obama "put it to us" in the form of a big income tax hike. Not only will we not receive a Cola this year and next year but from now on our checks will be about $35 less because of the new Obama tax hike. I even called the retired pay office in London, KY and they said it was a big surprise to them too. I can just see all his rich buddies laughing all the way to the bank with more "bail out money" from our increased taxes. Some of it will probably go toward the big "high speed" joke of a train he wants to build. Lord, help us.

Thanks a lot , Obama, for all the hope and change and thanks to all those liberal states who elected you. Yeah, right.

The Obama administration has cut taxes, largely for the middle class,by $240 billion since taking office on Jan 20,2009. A program aimed at families earning less than $150,000 that was contained in the stimulus package lowered the burden for 95 percent of working Americans by $116 billion, or about $400 per year for individuals and $800 for married couples. Other measures include breaks for college education, moderate-income families and the unemployment. With the Republicans in charge, your increase was probably a backroom deal brokered by the Republicans.

Hope is correct Mr Gross. Below is the link to politifact so that you can read the story. Obama was not touting Bushes tax cut he was talking about his own. The reason everyone was talking about the bush tax cuts is because they were set to expire. Although Obama and the democrats wanted to make the tax cuts for people like you permanent, the republican party on behalf of the rich, fought like hell to make sure the tax cuts on the lowere 99% of america was held hostage for the tax cut for the top 1 percent.
I am retired military too and everything for me stayed the same. In fact I wondered why they wasted paper sending me the notification. Without seeing your retired pay statement, I would assume that you are having some type of allotment taken from your pay that caused the change. Perhaps you are having your medicare part B payments withdrawn from your retired pay?
Whatever the reason, I don't believe it's the result of any tax increase by Obama no matter what FAUX News tell you.

Republicans, like FAUX,CNBC, and countless other news organizations, will go to any length to create a negative spin against President Obama and the Democrats, all paid for by billionaires and millionaires. After the disasters they created under Bush, this is their way of trying to get people to forget the Dark Ages and The Lost Decade under Bush.

Article Comment grammy commented at 2/11/2011 7:37:00 AM:

Mr. Gross, do your homework. The $35.00 tax increase is not an increase at all. It is a rollback to the 2009 tax level. When we were given this tax break for one year it was part of the plan to get the economy moving. It was made plain that it would be rolled back after one year. I believe you can find this on IRS.gov, think that is where I found it.

Article Comment solusod commented at 2/11/2011 9:31:00 AM:

Some of the comments on this story are nothing of hilarious. And it becomes obvious when they are beholden to ideology (mostly Democratic from the comments here). Hope says, "With the Republicans in charge, your increase was probably a backroom deal brokered by the Republicans." Republicans in charge? What planet are you living on? The Republicans took over in early January, this deal was brokered in December. (Let's not let the,uh, facts get in the way). So are you alleging Republicans raised taxes? That's a new one.

Raider's comments are almost as funny and show ideology as well. Note that as far as he is concerned there are the people who deserve tax cuts (but never defined) and then those who should have theirs raised. Then we have this gem: Although Obama and the democrats wanted to make the tax cuts for people like you permanent, the republican party on behalf of the rich, fought like hell to make sure the tax cuts on the lowere 99% of america was held hostage for the tax cut for the top 1 percent.

I really hope Raider does not actually BELIEVE this. If this comment is TRUE (and it isn't) then Mr Raider needs to explain how in the world Obama failed to lower certain taxes given he had control of both houses INCLUDING a filibuster-proof Senate for over a year. How could he fail to deliver? The answer is that he never intended to lower taxes, he simply said it so people would vote him into office. The Republicans could not stop ANYTHING Obama wanted to do until Scott Brown was elected in January 2010. So if Obama REALLY wanted to do this, blaming the Republicans and then attacking them only shows Mr Raider is out of touch with reality or doesn't know basic civics.

Then Hope returns with this gem: "Republicans, like FAUX,CNBC, and countless other news organizations, will go to any length to create a negative spin against President Obama and the Democrats, all paid for by billionaires and millionaires." I wonder if Hope realizes that the rich contribute to BOTH PARTIES. Now if you're President Obama and sitting in DC, do you pass stuff that will benefit people whom you don't know or do you pass stuff that benefits the people who gave you hundreds of thousands (sometimes millions) of dollars? Answering that question shouldn't take more than a second. Hope is still buying into the lie that the Democrats care about the common man. Let me make it clear to you - NONE of them care about the poor or the common man. If they did, they'd be serving soup in a kitchen and giving away THEIR money to the poor, not taking yours from you and giving it away.

Fact is that for years we've heard how any proposed "freeze" on spending that Reagan or the Bushes proposed equaled a "cut." Using that logic Obama and his Democrat-controlled Congress CUT veterans benefits. I don't know very many vets who are millionaires and hence the evidence is pretty obvious. Keep in mind something: I am NOT saying the Republicans are any better because they are not; but the Republicans don't pose as champions of "the little guy" while ripping him off at the same time, either.

You're right , Mr. Gross, when obama takes more of our income, it's called a tax increase, period. Liked your letter. And liked your comments too, solusod.
Obama is a one termer for sure and the sooner the better. Can't wait till next year! Poor hope and raider will probably shoot themselves or move to China. Either way is fine with me.

Yeap, the slick usurper in chief done slipped it to us again. No one knew it was coming cept maybe for his big company pals and the union chiefs. You're righ Mr Gross, they laugh all the way to the bank with our money. hope and raider probably don't pay income tax at all so what do they care?
Maybe he won't be in office through 2012, it depends on the supreme court's decision on the "natural bore citizen" case.
Long live Alan Keyes.

Now Hope ??? Republicans in charge ??? I am low when it come to income, but where you goona go when you need help ??? to a poor man?? gimme a break ! It is no crime to get rich...You democrats want the working man to pay everybody's way...Free college, free abortions, free medicine for homo's with AIDS. free condoms, free rides to school, free free free...you have taught, by example and now the pot is empty....Reublicans in charge ???? wow that's rich !!!

Please pardon all of the type o's in the comment above..thanks

Article Comment raider commented at 2/11/2011 1:48:00 PM:

@solusod: The civics class that I took taught that it took a super majority of 60% of the votes to overcome a filibuster. The Democrats never had sixty votes. If I remember correctly. Al Frankens election was held up for a few months and Ted Kennedy was out with the brain tumor. On top of that, Lieberman only caucused with the Dems. He really was a republican that leaned republican. But that was ok because Dems don't require party loyalty like republicans.
Now as far as the permanent tax cut for the folks making less than 250000. The dems spent half a year trying to find one republican senator to break ranks but that never happened. But I guess you don't remember that.
@grammy: you may be correct but I am retired military also and there was no change to my retired pay or deductions. I was thinking it that it could be a increase in medicare payments because i believe medicare part B increased but I am not old enough for medicare.

Article Comment observer2 commented at 2/11/2011 3:05:00 PM:

I'm retired military and my tax increased. So did my son in law's . Not only did his retired pay change but his cicilian job pay did too. It wasn't only for retirees. If raider had a job now it would effect it . Has nothing to do with being on medicare.
A majority of Americans can't wait until next year when we take our Country completely back including a majority in the senate. So you're not alone melody. raider and hope just might take their lives before then if Obama keeps messing up. Can't believe he has sat around watching cable news while letting Egypt slip into the hands of the muzlim brothhood. gogetum, the case you refer to is being looked at in Calif supreme court now and Keyes is one of the good guys pushing it. Heck, even old "thrill up my leg" Matthews on MSNBC is demanding Obama show us a real birthcertificate. Since the Gov of Hawaii has said there is no certificate here--it's looking like Keyes is right to call Obama the "usurper in chief".
Just noticed today's dispatch opinion page doesn't have solusod's comments but does have raiders and grammys. Is anyone else scratching their head?

What ever happened to fairness? No cost of living raises in two years but higher deductions for everything.

This is what I found at Navy Times. It's what grammy said.

I'm still scratching my head about this one. I know my tax was increased, says so on my statement and so was my son in law's. What confuses me is the comments by grammy and raider. If raider got a tax decrease in 09 like grammy said he did , then raider should be getting a tax increase this month just like everybody else but he said nothing changed for him so I find what they are saying hard to believe, don't you? I know for sure that allotments have nothing to do with taxes so is it possible that raider is not really a retired military person and is just making up stuff? He said he knew it's not a Obama tax hike so evidently he and hope are drinking the same cool aid and blaming it on Bush. How sad. Obama has been in the White House more than two years now and when my taxes increase I call like it is -- an Obama tax hike just as Mr. Gross did.

Article Comment hope commented at 2/11/2011 8:26:00 PM:

@jim varnon-----when I started reading your comment, I thought sure you were going to tell me the Republicans were not in charge and my nightmare would be over. But when I finished, I realized that was not the case. Maybe in 2012, I can get rid of it. (Incharge of the House.)

Article Comment hope commented at 2/12/2011 10:24:00 AM:

@all retirees;the Obama stimulus tax cuts were for the "working" families only.

Article Comment hope commented at 2/12/2011 10:37:00 AM:

@solusod:The Republicans don't pose as champions to the little guy while ripping him off at the same time.
The $240 billion dollar tax break that Obama gave to 95% of "working" families was no rip off.
What was a rip off was the money that was stolen from the poor under Bush and his cronies that sent our country into a depression.

Article Comment hope commented at 2/14/2011 12:48:00 PM:

@raymond------if the lady is correct about your $35.00 tax increase, and because President Obama's tax cut was for working families only, they may have given it to you erringly, and you will have to pay it back to the government.
