Allen Greenhaw: Questions candidate's calls

Is it ethical for a Lowndes County Schools employee who happens to be a candidate for superintendent to use the school districts database for political purposes? I received an automated call at 8 o''clock Thursday night with the voice of this candidate, who repeated her name several times. We''ve had a child in the district for five years, and we''ve never received a call like this. Oh yea, this is an election year. The message was nothing more than a cheap way to use the Lowndes County Schools resources to score airtime. If this kind of tactic is ethical, I guess I''ll just have to call it just plain tacky!

Wow, seriously? I would think it would be unethical. I have a child in the school district, in the Caledonia area. We did not get a call...maybe because the principal is a candidate? Would be interesting to know how many got this call. Not only is it tacky, but it is using a service(the automated call service) that I am sure the school district pays for.

Seriously! Even though the election was never mentioned in the recorded message, it was an obvious ploy for name recognition. This should NEVER have happened! Talk about conflict of interest... Is this the person you want to represent the Lowndes County School District???

What school in the district do your kids attend? I seriuosly think it must have been to "plug" a name since the Caledonia Schools did not get the call.....like I said before, prob because the principal is running....because the other "candidate" knew it was for a plug and she knew he would not stand for it!! Very questionable....

Thats the odd thing...My kids are no longer in the LCSD! They previously attended New Hope. New Hope High Schools former principle is also running for Superintendent & has great support in the community. Mrs. McGill should have known that this was a bad idea and would not go without much criticism.

Wow! The motivation behind this call is obvious. I think it really shows her true character. I agree with the adjective, tacky.

I don't know why y'all are making this a big deal. I received a call and it was a simple welcome back message. This looks like an attempt for her opponents to dig up something on Mrs. McGill(which is quite ridiculous) I could understand if it had anything to do with her campaign but it didn't, if anyone is going to talk about ethical @sallysue, I think you should look at the other candidate. and @mrsthm, why would a candidate be concerned with name recognition when everyone knows who's running and the very people who get out and vote in runoffs are the ones who voted previously.

With a child in the district, I also received the call and thought it was a good thing welcoming back the students and also tell me something I didn't know about being in the top 30 districts in the state. I completely agree with @js49. Y'all are looking for something to attack her with. after the good campaign mcgill has run, and all the stuff I have heard about her opponent, I couldn't imagine if she decided to start attacking him like y'all are doing here.

This call was NOTHING but a welcome back and I appreciated it, nice to see someone that wants to reach out to us from the office..you people should be ashamed.

First welcome back call I've ever had from her! Funny it happens election year.

Article Comment 4mcgill commented at 8/8/2011 7:48:00 AM:

She did the same thing last year but I guess it's hard for people to remember it since there wasn't a political race going on. Get over it people! She was just doing her job!

Article Comment sallysue commented at 8/8/2011 9:11:00 AM:

Come on people!!!! It was nothing but political. I have never gotten a call from her! And like I said before, why in the world did she not have the call go out to the other school in the district? Caledonia? She didn't because she knew this was a political move and she could not have her message heard in a school where she has an opponent running. If you can't see that something is up with her not placing a call to any students at that school, well then ...... What is her motive for not having the call go out to the parents of students who are attending the Caledonia schools??? @js49, FYI I am not supporting her opponent in the run off election. I am supporting a different candidate!!

I NEVER received a call from Ms McGill last year when I had kids in LCSD. I would have no problem with this call had it come from the current Superintendent or a principal. Bury your heads in the sand if you wish. It is clear to all what this call was actually for...name recognition. *ds1957, I'm not even close to ashamed! I'm appalled that this candidate thinks that Lowndes County voters are so ignorant.

Well, what many of you don't know is that LCSD is in trouble. We have had leadership for the past 8 years from the most dishonest person ever known to man. Our district has taken God , prayer, and discipline from our schools. Students are not accountable because their parents might be a school board member or their uncle knows the superintendent or maybe their parents are well known in the community. LCSD has been sweeping things under the carpet for years! Then, all of a sudden, Mr. Halford saw fit to get rid of Coach Hester most likely because Mr. Halford's son wasn't a good baseball player and never got to play. Therefore, he had it in for him. Then, when Mr. Wright investigated the incident and saw no grounds for dismissing Coach Hester, he was fired also. You see, honest and integrity win out every time! God is in control of this situation and I as a parent of LCSD am praying that a Godly person will win this election. You can talk about test scores all you want to, but until God, prayer, discipline, and respect are put back into these 3 schools, we are only looking for trouble. If we have the four things named aboved, I can assure you we will have good test scores! As far as disciplinary action, that probably won't happen unless Mr. Halford has a personal issue with Mrs. McGill and it seems he doesn't.

@ds1957, it's obvious that you are someone from central office to have such vast information of what Mrs. McGill has accomplished- maybe even her secretary! People in the community wouldn't have this kind of information since we've never heard anything from Mrs. McGill until now. Oh, you must be a New Hope graduate and concerning test scores- those teachers were hired by Mr. Halford not Mr. Wright. For future reference, learn how to spell "principal" before you comment on your next post.

Article Comment ds1957 commented at 8/15/2011 4:28:00 PM:

@ethel, what race do you think this is? Is this the nonsense that Lynn Wright has been telling voters? The Superintendent of our schools is first of all among other things in charge of securing our accreditation, without that we have no state money. I would say the biggest responsibility is to make sure structurally that he is overseeing implementation of sound programs, teaching methods etc. that allow our principals and teachers to work hard and have success with the students. Secondly, we would all like to see God and prayer back in our public schools, but the Superintendent cannot make that happen. Try calling your Representative or Senator, or perhaps the Supreme Court Justices. What you people do not realize is that students who have discipline problems are mostly the students who have learning problems. Finding a way to teach them, get them to learn and grow out of those habits at school is a must. Mrs. McGill, with the help of other admins and teachers, has put programs in place that have decreased 30% of discipline actions. Whatever she is implementing is working, why are people not looking at the facts? Mrs. McGill is constantly working to improve the schools from communication to curriculum. It is obvious she is no politician, but why would we want one of those anyway? Lynn Wright supporters can keep disrespecting her about doing her job, but you need to look at your own candidate for ethical issues now that he has been let go of 2 jobs for the same reasons- oh his experience you ask? not enough experience in public schools, no clear results but a downgrade in test scores at new hope? The good ole boy system of Wright and Hester- is the real problem. They all want to be in power again, and do nothing but hold a job. I mean come on voters, the choice is clear. McGill, McGill, McGill.
