Rick McGill: Negative campaigning

I received a copy of a widespread e-mail that was sent out Thursday, Aug. 4th. The sender was a Lynn Wright supporter. In the text of the e-mail, there some crass remarks made towards my wife''s campaign but nothing that I couldn''t normally shake off. Let me say here, I don''t think Mr. Wright knew about this e-mail. However, there was on paragraph that said to be aware of an upcoming smear campaign against Mr. Wright coming from the McGill campaign. There is nothing further from the truth.

My wife has run a campaign based solely on what has been accomplished by the school district through the hard work of the great teachers and administrators in the five years she has been assistant superintendent. She has not said one thing negative towards Mr. Wright.

As a matter of fact, Mr. Wright and I spoke Thursday night at the 12-Man Supper Club and I told him then that many people had told us that we should get down and dirty. I told them and I told him that''s not going to happen. We both agreed when she decided to run, to run a positive effort and if that message got across and she won, fine and, if it didn''t, fine. We know how we feel about negative talk and negative ads and we didn''t want to subject the people of Lowndes County to such.

The down-to-earth facts are these: You shouldn''t vote for Mr. Wright just because you think he was wronged. And you shouldn''t vote for Edna just to vote against Mr. Wright. You should vote for the person you feel will lead the children of this area into the future with the best education possible.

Kudos to the McGills. Mr. McGill couldn't have said it better. You shouldn't vote for Mr. Wright just because you think he was wronged. And you shouldn't vote for Edna just to vote against Mr. Wright. You should vote for the person you feel will lead the children of this area into the future with the best education possible.

I agree completely agree with this letter. Glad to see some genuine honesty. I know who to vote for to lead the children of this area, someone who actually cares about education and has the experience to deal with our district--Edna McGill!

This coming from a real estate agenty who owns rental property and won't fix a tile floor that is coming up each time they sweep. Has promised for 3 months now that the company will repair it, but have yet showed up to perform the work. They cut the grass around the property one time this summer. Why should we believe anything you say rick?

By the way, answer me this question. Why were the public schools not good enough for your child? Now your wife wants to run the public schools and she would not even let her child go there. That's one reason I will not vote for edna. Well that's the second reason I guess, the other is the fact that your company lies to it's tenants about repairs to the property.

Stay out of politics if your skin is a bit thin. You isn't running for junior class treasurer.

Article Comment fedup w/columbus commented at 8/10/2011 11:24:00 PM:

Just another reason to relocate. Several white teachers and administrators do not send their children to public schools. The schools are not good enough for your children, but being paid by the State of MS is good enough to provide for your family? This says a lot about our schools. If it's not good enough for your kids, are you ( teacher or administrator) good enough to teach and prepare kids for a successful future? What a slap in ones face to be employed in the public school system but you yourself don't believe in the school system, so you send your white kid to an all white private school. My kids take advantage of the tax paid education and we are in the 11th percentile. Because of hypercrit's like these, is the reason city schools are 89% non-white.

Article Comment ds1957 commented at 8/11/2011 10:10:00 AM:

@tiredfedupsick: Have you ever heard Gov Chris Christie from New Jersey, you should listen to his comments regarding his decision to send his children to private rather than public: "It's none of your damn business" Edna not only contributes tax money to the school system and her time and talents, but also, and most importantly, prefered to have her child raised in a Christian environment. It is soley her choice just as it was my choice to send mine to school as well and none of your concern. The same with you @fed up w/Columbus, this race is about the kids and should be focused on that not your petty attacks. She is the best for our kids whether you like her or not.

Edna not only contributes tax money, but used our tax money to promote herself with that automated call.....

OK OK... Wright is the only one who has worked in the school system! What has Edna done? nothing!

Article Comment sweetie1000 commented at 8/11/2011 4:07:00 PM:

Henderson???? You must not know a thing about either candidate! Yeah Wright worked in the school system, too bad he didn't know what he was doing, cause if he did he would still have a job. McGill has "worked in THIS school system" for 6 years and has worked in other school systems for 27 years. Get your facts straight henderson.

Article Comment foredna commented at 8/12/2011 11:29:00 AM:

Henderson, you are an BONAFIDE CERTIFIED IDIOT. Last time I checked, a person can send their child to any school they choose. If Edna felt her child would get the BEST education, based on HIS needs, then so what if she sends him to private school. Who cares??????? That is her and her husband's BEESWAX. Alot of kids from NEW HOPE have left and gone to private school.

WHAT I DON'T understand, is HOW Mr. Wright is even ALLOWED to run for superintendent GIVEN THE FACT HE HAS A LAWSUIT AGAINST THE VERY SCHOOL DISTRICT he is RUNNING FOR A POSITION IN. HOW CAN this even be legal???? Someone please check.

Also, didn't he "come over the state line from Alabama" and rent a home, just so he could run for the position????? How long has Mr. Wright been paying taxes in Lowndes County?????? ASK HIM....

And his getting "fired" I do believe was the last straw. It really had nothing to do with the Hester situation, that was just the final straw.

VOTE FOR THE PERSON WITH THE DOCUMENTED, PROVEN EXPERIENCE TO RUN THE DISTRICT AND THAT PERSON IS EDNA MCGILL.

Article Comment charman12 commented at 8/12/2011 12:21:00 PM:

Alright, well let's see. First of all Mrs. McGill was only a teacher when her son started attending school. She did not become a principal until he was well into high school not to mention she was the principal of an elementary school. So I don't think her son would have qualified to go there. It is every parent's choice where they put their children, and I see no one condemning you for not putting your children in a private school, so do not condemn her for not putting her son in public school. That has nothing to do with any of this! This is about providing a better opportunity for the children attending Lowndes County. We are on our way to becoming some of the best schools in the state and that is why big businesses move here and provide us with jobs, because the owners want their children in these schools! Mrs. McGill has been Assistant Superintendent for at least 5 years now and has done numerous things to move these schools in the right direction. She's implemented several programs for not only below average students, but also for the high achieving students. She's a wonderful person and I for one would not speak harshly about someone unless I had all my facts straight first. Second, what does Mr. McGill's company have to do with this? Shouldn't you be basing your voting off the candidate? Her husband is not running for office, she is, he is simply defending his wife like any good husband would. And Third, before we go rooting for Mr. Wright let's take a look at his school history. 1982-1987 McIntosh Christian, 1988-2005 Pickens Academy, and 2005-2006 Jackson Academy. Now, aren't all those private schools? Not to mention all three of his children attended these private schools. But the real question is what happened to these jobs? Why isn't Mr. Wright still working for at least one of these schools? Maybe we should do some research before electing him to lead our children's future. I'd like to end with an old saying referring to the current state of the Lowndes Country School. If it isn't broke, don't fix it!

Article Comment henderson commented at 8/12/2011 12:48:00 PM:

Well... It's been broken for quite some time now- Thanks Mr. Superintendent! As for Mr. Wright's lawsuit- he's well deserving of this lawsuit going in his direction and clearing his name- each of you would do the same if you were wronged. New Hope is well on it's way down the drain... Caledonia finally has a principal that cares... and West Lowndes has got children that are starving to learn! These schools can once and for all try to join together and get someone into office that understands what it's like to be a teacher or a principal in these schools... let the teachers teach instead of making them go through miles and miles of red tape to get something done. They were put there to teach our children- let them do their jobs. Now, Mr. Wright will make sure this happens! I'm no IDIOT "sweetie" or "foredna"... you have no clue who you are talking to! And charman12- Mr. McGill need not even put this add in the paper when he has so many enemies... he might should work on things in his household... "as any good husband would do..."???... You're not talking about the same man I am then....

Article Comment charman12 commented at 8/12/2011 1:12:00 PM:

Mrs. McGill is running a positive campaign, she doesn't want to hear the negativity, she is after what is best for these children. Look at Caledonia, New Hope, and West Lowndes 5 years ago, then look at them now. They are improving, slowly but surely. Mrs. McGill has been a part of that improvement. She wishes to keep improving for the better of these children. She doesn't have a hidden agenda, nor does she wish anything bad on any of her opponent, they are all wonderful people. But Mrs. McGill is simply the most qualified for the job. Like it or not she has the most experience at the top. Right now moving her into the superintendent job would keep Lowndes County moving, versus putting someone knew in there who has to start from scratch. That doesn't benefit the children, it only hinders them from continuing their goals. And leave Mr. McGill's home out of this, it has nothing to do with this campaign nor is it of any relevance to bettering the school system. As an alumni of Caledonia I've seen first hand the improvements from 5 years ago. I was in school 5 years ago, and I tell you it is not near as good as it is now.

Don't believe I called you an idiot "henderson". I simply stated that your comment made no sense at all. And your comment before that, well u should be ashamed, what u said had nothing to do with the campaign, which is the matter at hand. And were not talking about the "man" here, we are talking about a Woman. Edna McGill. The Right person for the job!

Article Comment observer2 commented at 8/12/2011 3:50:00 PM:

hey sweety 1000, how many years in the class room does she have?

Article Comment charman12 commented at 8/12/2011 4:05:00 PM:

She has 32 years experience total:

14 Years of Administrative Experience
5 Years, Assistant Superintendent
7 Years, Principal (Cook Elementary)
2 Years, Assistant Principal (Sudduth Elementary)

The rest is in classroom experience.

Article Comment gogetum commented at 8/12/2011 11:12:00 PM:

For all you who went to State, that adds up to 28 years of non class room experience. 32 minus 28= 4. When and where was the 4 years ? What grades were taught? Inquiring voters need to know.

Article Comment charman12 commented at 8/13/2011 1:06:00 AM:

You misunderstood my post. She has 32 years experience in total. 14 of those years were Administrative, such as Assistant principal, principal, and Assistant Superintendent. The other 18 years were in classroom experiences. Please understand I am not here to bash Mr. Wright, I have met him and he is a wonderfully nice man. However, I do not believe he is qualified for this position. My opinion is based on these facts. From 1982-2006 he was a football coach/headmaster at PRIVATE schools. The rest was spend as principal/coach at New Hope High until he was fired in 2009. He has little to no classroom experience in a PUBLIC school system. If he had any experience and knew the rules I am sure he would have kept his job in the public school system. He was successful in private schools, not successful in public schools. Lowndes County Schools: Caledonia, West Lowndes, and New Hope are public schools. Mrs. McGill is simply more qualified for this job. I just wish everyone would stop making this about Mr. Wright's lawsuit, Mr. Wright's residence, Mr. McGill's home, and all those other things that don't matter! THIS IS ABOUT THE CHILDREN, THIS IS ABOUT WHO IS MOST QUALIFIED TO LEAD OUR CHILDREN INTO THEIR FUTURE, AND FINALLY THIS IS ABOUT THE RIGHT DECISION. On August 23, 2011 don't vote with your emotions, don't vote with your heart, vote with your intelligence. Think about the children and how much has improved recently. Do we really want to start all over again and have to watch our children suffer for four years because their parent's made the wrong decision?

Article Comment alexis commented at 8/14/2011 10:43:00 PM:

all of you are idiots if you think Edna McGill really cares about those children. She wants prestige and power and is hell to work for. Ask some of the teachers that she worked with at Cook Elementary just how pleasant she was to work for and more importantly did she care about the kids, especially the black kids... you might get the truth and you might not

@ds1957---------Yes, I've heard of him. He's the guy that enjoys using the state's helicopter to fly him to see his son play baseball at the taxpayers expense. He also told the taxpayers he didn't give a damn what they thought. But since he is determined to hold the government accountable for money spent, the taxpayers reminded him of that, and he reimbursed the state for those trips. There are other trips that he made that's not logged in. He was taken to the ER room last week for shortness of breath, because of being overweight. Having to re-imburse the state may have contributed to his breathing or not breathing also. He says he has tried several diets but none seem to work. Pushing his plate back far enough that he can't reach it will work. He's just another overweight Republican politician full of hot air!
