In response to your editorial of Sept. 22 on “Save the Post Office” I wrote to the Washington office. Enclosed is both my letter and their response which gives the address to write concerning our post office.
I thought you might find it helpful.
To the Postal Regulatory Commission:
Dear Sir,
Columbus, Mississippi is a historic city filled with buildings, homes and landmarks which reflect its standing as a top tourist locale. A part of this treasured history is the downtown post office which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The importance of this post office is not only of historic significance, but it is the center and major source of postal service for all the downtown businesses, churches, law firms, near-by college and the many downtown lost residents. All can easily walk to this post office. The only other large postal facility is available only to users who have transportation and it is located several miles north of the heart of the city.
Please allow this important hub to our downtown area to remain open and viable. Its closure would adversely impact the commerce of the area.
