The threat of looming war?
Adele Elliott on Dec. 29 wrote in her column that the United States faces “the constant threat of looming war with countries across the globe. Which countries? Just pick one. We have generated so much ill-will almost everyone hates us.” This is certainly a condemnatory tour of the horizon, but is seems a might casual one.
It would be good if, next time, Ms. Elliott named, say, five countries threatening the United States with war or being threatened with war because of hate. Iran comes to mind — and not because of hatred but because of its nuclear plans — and who else? For all but a very few nations (China and Russia might survive), going to war with the United States means at least the end of that nation’s government.
Also, to reduce that ill-will, with what country would Ms. Elliott replace the United States as the leader in maintaining global peace, worldwide air and shipping lanes (see the South China Sea), and anti-terrorism vigilance with its own blood and money?
