The Federal Communications Commission should not turn the “information superhighway” into a toll road.
Regulations under consideration by the FCC threaten to do just that by permitting Internet service providers to charge extra fees to websites for preferential treatment.
Websites should continue to be equally accessible to consumers. That’s the essence of “net neutrality” and it is what has permitted the Internet to flourish, changing how many Americans live and make a living.
This level online playing field has enabled the Internet to become a venue for “unprecedented entrepreneurialism and creativity,” as Michael Beckerman says in a column on today’s Opinion page.
That neutrality should stay in place.
