Criticism misguided
Senate candidate and farmer Chuck Younger has been criticized for receiving farm subsidies from the federal government. Anyone who knows about USDA price supports will tell you these subsidies are a way the federal government seeks to provide stability to a very unpredictable business. Many area farmers participate in the program.
Through this program our government promotes a safe and reliable food source and often results in over-production of crops — crops that feed our country’s residents, and the world. Overproduction leads cheap prices, often way below break-even.
Less than two percent of our nation’s people are farmers, and they feed the world. Mr. Younger raises cattle, corn and soybeans. These crops are all involved in the federal farm price-support programs to ensure a safe, cheap and reliable food source for our people.
You think oil and gas is high … what if we were dependent on other countries for food … thanks for bringing this out.
It is always good to educate our citizens when a teachable moment arrives. Farmers built and continue to support our state and nation and feed the world.
