Differs with columnist
I read the reprinted column of John Sheirer from Massachusetts with interest. It sounds as though liberals are as close to godliness as one could hope to attain in this life. I bet he also believes that, as a liberal, the byproducts of his digestive processes don’t stink. Well, I don’t buy what he is trying to sell.
History is not my strong suit so I won’t try to dispute some of his early American liberal claims. I myself tend to lean more in a conservative direction, but I believe in the Bill of Rights, right to vote, National Parks, eight-hour work day, minimum wage, and Social Security. I also believe that slavery and child labor was cruel and evil. I believe in public education IF it can be reformed and actually educate our next generation. Read TIME, Mr. Sheirer. Let’s get rid of the few “bad apple” teachers, end or change tenure, and make the liberal teacher’s union accountable for fostering a climate of mediocrity, at best, in our public schools.
Liberals also brought us the so-called Affordable Care Act and now some can’t afford their medical care. Liberals said something along the lines of “You can keep your doctor if you want.”
Liberals also blame conservatives for the do-nothing Congress, yet the liberal Harry Reid refuses to bring bill after bill to a vote in the Senate. Liberals are now making it almost “guilty until proved innocent” for college students accused of sexual crimes. Liberals made access to abortion legal and some even believe and profess the teachings of Peter Singer and other similar philosophers on our college campuses. On Oct. 29, “The College Fix” published an article indicating that more college students now support post-birth abortion.
Peter Singer is quoted as saying in 1979 that “human babies are not born self-aware, or capable of grasping that they exist over time. They are not persons…..(therefore) the life of a newborn is of less value than the life of a pig, a dog, or a chimpanzee.” Now granted I am assuming the accuracy of this article, but if this is an example of liberal thinking, then I find it appalling and without merit.
Nobody and no group has all the answers, not conservatives and certainly not liberals. Only by talking and debating issues can we find compromise that all can live with. Only then will real progress be made. Both sides have contributed in the past and are needed if we are to have a successful future in the USA. Stop tooting just one horn. It takes many instruments in a symphony orchestra to make beautiful music.
