Soccer merits more coverage
Soccer season kicked off this past weekend all over the state with classic tournaments played at various venues. Columbus High School hosted one of these classic tournaments at our very own soccer complex in downtown Columbus.
Ben Moore, head soccer coach at Columbus High, and all involved did a great job hosting the event. There were four area teams in the tournament Columbus, MSMS, West Point, and Caledonia with both boys and girls teams present.
What I saw was a lot of great soccer, support from the volunteer workers, large crowds coming out to cheer on their teams, and a well-maintained, beautiful soccer complex.
What I didn’t see was one single reporter from any of the area’s news outlets. Hundreds of players, parents, fans, and coaches pour everything into our soccer season and with often very little news coverage from anybody. I am under no illusions that we live in the South and football is still king, but these players that work and train year round deserve recognition.
I want to challenge The Commercial Dispatch, WCBI, and The Columbus Packet to step up and cover some soccer this year during the season and not just wait until the playoffs.
