Show your appreciation for law enforcement officers
As a law enforcement officer for 26 years, 19 of these as chief of police with the Columbus Police Department, it is incomprehensible to me anyone would take the life of any law enforcement officer for any reason. Law enforcement officers are sworn to protect the lives and property of all citizens and are certainly the first line of defense for the public they serve.
Most of the officers who are killed are in an ambush-type situation and never are given a chance to defend themselves against such heinous attacks. What type of criminal would commit these assaults?
Could it be for name recognition? Gang initiation? A mention in the news media? An incorrigible person?
It takes a special person to be a law enforcement officer: shift work, long hours, verbal abuse, danger, inadequate pay. Yet these men and women love the profession. But when their shift is over, they also want to go to their homes and families.
It is my hope and prayer these criminals will be brought to justice and their punishment will be severe and timely. So the next time you see one of these officers, let him or her know that you support them appreciate what they do for you.
