My advice to MSU is to let Jeffrey Simmons begin school there and play football. BUT tell him upfront that he’s on “double secret probation” and just one infraction will be the straw that broke the camel’s back.
I can think of no worse punishment than to know you’ve got to walk on eggs and be a really upstanding member of the MSU football squad. As for the charges he and others are facing, that ain’t “simple assault.” It’s assault and battery.
A lot has been said about Obama appointing a Supreme Court Justice to fill the late Justice Scalia’s seat. I’ve always thought that justice (and especially Supreme Court Justices) was supposed to be blind. Nominating and confirming or rejecting a person based on his or her political views is NOT justice. It makes a mockery of justice.
The Senate should give Obama’s nominee a chance for an up-or-down vote, based strictly on how he or she reads (interprets) the US Constitution and let that person know, up front, that if he or she allows his or her political views to cloud his or her decisions, Supreme Court Justices can be impeached, too.
While we’re at it, the testimony during confirmation hearings should be (if not already) given under oath so that the Senate can depend on the nominee doing what he or she said he or she would. No Justice should be considered “conservative” or “liberal,” just honest interpeters of the Constitution using the word definitions in use when the Constitution was written.
A lot of hand-wringing is going on over how to execute prisoners condemned to die. When the Constitution was written, hanging and firing squads were the norm. They were not considered “cruel and unusual punishment” then, and should not be considered cruel now. …
