Doesn’t understand support for Trump
Augustine Washington asked his son, George, “Did you chop down the cherry tree?” We all know his answer. Now, imagine Fred Trump asking his son, The Donald, the same question. I imagine his answer would be, “Hillary did it. Lock her up!”
“But, Donald, I have you on cell phone video chopping down the tree.”
“Fake news! And besides, Obama did it first.”
This is fanciful, but it is consistent with the President’s behavior. Uncounted times, he has denied saying things he said on camera, or has said things proven to be false. He is even a self-confessed liar. When asked about his propensity for mendacity, he said, “I try to tell the truth, when I can.” When he can?
He has told obvious lies so often it is no longer cause for notice. No one seems to care.
He has made recorded statements so demeaning to women, that I, a former Marine, was embarrassed. No one seems to care.
He has been shown to treat his marriage vows as an inconvenience to be ignored, except when adultery being made public was politically awkward. Then, he resorted to bribery. No one seems to care. Well, maybe Melania.
But then, he attempted to bribe the new President of Ukraine to vilify one of his political rivals, using OUR tax dollars–money set aside by Congress to help protect that country from Russian aggression.
Russia has already invaded Ukraine and seized Crimea. President Putin has withheld natural gas from Kiev in the winter. Russia is an existential threat to Ukraine, and by extension, to Eastern Europe. Once again, our tanks must stand guard in the Fulda Gap. Tom Clancy’s Red Storm Rising will gain new currency.
Withholding military aid is a powerful threat. This is making an offer that cannot be refused. President Trump has sent a horse’s head to President Zelensky’s bed. And for what? A possible advantage over a political rival.
President Trump has promised us a wall. The people on the spot tell us a wall will have little effect, but a wall we shall have. The bridges on our interstate highways are falling down; we have infrastructure problems everywhere; but a wall we shall have.
President Trump has used his power to extort billions of dollars from the United States Armed Forces, forcing generals to triage their various missions, reducing their flexibility and their ability to respond to unexpected threats, for a wall.
Does it warm your heart to see the national symbol change from the Statue of Liberty to a border wall?
President Trump is the poster boy for one-way loyalty, casting loyal people to the wolves if they resist his excesses.
So why do any of us support him? For his achievements? Someone please provide me a list of his achievements. I can think of nothing he has done to actually improve the country, unless you own coal mines.
Simply saying “Make America Great Again” does not make it so. It does not even make America better.
Imagine Washington, who could not tell a lie, looking on. What would he say?
