This is a big week for several area prep football teams.
Starting 2-0 in region play is huge and can open the pathway for a playoff berth. Any team in six-team region then stands one win away from clinching a winning season in region play.
Let's look ahead to this big weekend and see what lies around the corner...
Northwest Rankin at Columbus
The Falcons return home and really need a victory against Northwest Rankin.
Last season, Northwest Rankin managed 58 yards of total offense but still walked away from Homecoming with a hard-fought 13-6 win over Columbus.
A year ago, that contest virtually determined the fourth and final playoff spot from Class 6A, Region 2. This season, the winner will still face an uphill climb for a playoff berth but at least will have a better pulse.

West Lowndes at Nanih Waiya
In recent weeks, the West Lowndes offense has gone to another level. The West Lowndes defense has produced solid numbers throughout the season.
With the two units working together, West Lowndes will have a chance at a playoff berth in Class 1A, Region 3.
It appears that Sebastopol, Nanih Waiya, Pelahatchie and French Camp area again the class of the division.
Knocking off some members of that group would allow West Lowndes to play in the postseason.

Lake Cormorant at New Hope
New Hope has started 6-0 overall and 2-0 in Class 1A, Region 5 play.
The Trojans are beginning to see the bandwagon fill up. A third region win would not only be the most since 2010 but it would allow New Hope to start a realistic playoff discussion.
Lake Cormorant has had some success in this region. However, it has been a struggle this season as the squad remains winless.
Look for another big night for the home team as it generates a tremendous amount of momentum heading into next week's showdown with region favorite Oxford.
New Hope 34, Lake Cormorant 6
Greenville at Starkville
The high-flying Starkville offense will be on display Friday night in another Class 6A, Region 2 matchup with Greenville.
The top-ranked Yellow Jackets have breezed with no resistance to six victories to start the season. Victory No. 7 will never be in doubt.
Look for reserves to play early and often as Starkville preps for a mammoth region showdown with Madison Central.
Starkville 52, Greenville 0
Leake Central at Noxubee County
A huge showdown for the early Class 4A, Region 4 lead is set for Friday night in Macon.
Noxubee County has not lost a region game since the 2011 season and this may be its bigggest challenge this season to that streak.
Leake Central can score points. This season, Noxubee County has been able to do the same.
The big challenge will be can the Noxubee County defense perform to its normal exceptional level. We will go ahead and say yes.
Noxubee County 34, Leake Central 20
Caledonia at West Lauderdale
Caledonia looks for a 2-0 start in Class 4A, Region 4 play.
The Confederates can take a major step towards a playoff berth with a victory here.
West Lauderdale is off to a sluggish start. The Knights will be hard-pressed to slow down Brandon Henry.
West Lauderdale looks to stay in the race, while Caledonia looks for the rare 2-0 start.
West Lauderdale 34, Caledonia 30
Aberdeen at Kemper County
Speaking of defensive challenges, Kemper County will be asked to slow down Aberdeen's Josh Williams in this massive Class 3A, Region 4 showdown.
After finishing 7-6 last season, Aberdeen can move to 6-2 with a victory here in this contest.
The Bulldogs will need to score some points and mix in a defensive stop or two. If they can do both of those, a showdown with Louisville for the region lead follows next week.
