The Friends of the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library concludes its Table Talk series Wednesday with a presentation by nationally-known Civil War historian Dr. John Marszalek.
Dr. Marszalek, the Giles Distinguished Professor Emeritus of History at Mississippi State University, will discuss the acquisition of the Ulysses S. Grant”s presidential papers which have been housed at MSU since 2009. The collection includes military documents, photographs, books, memorabilia and thousands of letters written by and to Grant. It is the largest single collection of Grant papers and additional items in the world.
Best known for his critically acclaimed and award-winning book, “Sherman: A Soldier”s Passion for Order,” Marszalek has lectured widely throughout the U.S. and has appeared on both broadcast and cable networks to discuss a range of historical subjects.
“The first time Grant was here, he captured Corinth, Vicksburg and Jackson. Now, almost 150 years later, Mississippi has ”captured” Gen. Grant,” said Friends board member Jo Shumake. “We are excited that Dr. Marszalek will be with us to discuss the elusive 18th president of the United States.”
Doors open at 11:30 a.m. for those wishing to bring their lunch and socialize before the program begins at 12:00 noon. The Friends will serve iced tea.
