TUPELO - Safety barriers are going up along highways in six North Mississippi counties to prevent intentional and accidental crossovers into oncoming traffic.
The cable barriers are being installed in Union, Pontotoc, Lee and Itawamba counties on U.S. Highway 78. The same barriers are going up along U.S. Highway 82 in Oktibbeha and Lowndes counties.
The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports that the $9.1 million federally funded project will extend from the Benton County line eastward to the Alabama state line on U.S. 78, and across Oktibbeha and Lowndes counties on U.S. 82.
MDOT says work should be completed in October.
MDOT says the barriers will prevent intentional but illegal crossings of medians to change driving direction.
