The city of West Point will be getting a $250,000 grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission to fix a collapsed sewer main.
The announcement was made Friday afternoon from the office of Democratic Congressman Travis Childers.
The sewer main in question runs under Highway 45 and has created a 50 foot hole extending 23 feet down the highway.
“I was with Congressman Childers in his Washington office when this grant was announced,” said Mayor Scott Ross. “I greatly appreciate the Congressman”s help on behalf of West Point. This was an emergency that we hadn”t planned or budgeted for, and these funds will ensure that the problem is fixed and our residents are safe.”
The grant will be used to replace the 24 inch sewer line and relocate it to run adjacent to the roadway, as well as make necessary repairs to prevent collapse in the future.
“This grant represents an important investment in the health and quality of life for West Point residents,” Childers said in a press release.
In addition to funding from the ARC grant, the city has secured an emergency $100,000 Community Development Block Grant from the state to help with the costs of the repair.
