Visitors to the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library Tuesday, July 12, can be transported to another continent, or pay a literary visit to the Piggly Wiggly, all in the same day.
From 2-3 p.m., Terrence “Da Story Weaver” Roberts will share African folktales with children of all ages at the library at 314 Seventh St. N. The program is sponsored by the Friends of the Library and the Mississippi Arts Commission.
Roberts is a griot (gree-oh), as West African storytellers are called, a repository of oral tradition, one who delivers history as a poet. He weaves his stories like his favorite character, a spider named Anansi, weaves webs. Roberts, of Meridian, is a broadcast journalist and spoken word poet.
With an animated and interactive style, the Mississippi State University alumnus takes listeners to the village squares of a land far away. Read more about him at dastoryweaver.com.
Also on Tuesday, specifically for adults, Mississippi author Robert Dalby will be on hand for a book signing and barbecue dinner from 6-7:30 p.m. in the second-floor meeting room. There is no cost to attend, but reservations are required.
Dalby, a native of Natchez, has written five novels, including “A Piggly Wiggly Wedding,” “Waltzing at the Piggly Wiggly,” and “Kissing Babies at the Piggly Wiggly,” winner of the Mississippi Library Association”s Best Fiction award of 2008.
For information about these programs or to make reservations, contact the library at 662-329-5300.
