JACKSON -- Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour tells The Associated Press his first event as a professional speaker will be the day after he leaves office.
Barbour says he's booked to speak Jan. 11 in Miami at a conference hosted by Barclays bank.
His second term as governor ends at noon Jan. 10.
Barbour was a Washington lobbyist and former Republican National Committee chairman before he was elected governor in November 2003.
He's being represented by Leading Authorities, a Washington firm that handles speech bookings and event planning. Barbour told the AP on Monday that the firm contacted him last week about scheduling him for the Jan. 11 event.
He says he spoke to the state Ethics Commission to ensure he can book a paid speech that he'll deliver after leaving office.
