JACKSON — Some reaction to Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant’s first State of the State address Tuesday night:
n House Speaker Philip Gunn, R-Clinton, said he suspects Bryant was right when he proposed to cut the number of state boards and committees: “As I made appointments to committees, I learned of a number of committees and commissions that caused me to question what they are and what they do.”
n Sen. John Horhn, D-Jackson, said he liked proposals to use tax breaks to lure medical development and to put more money into Teach for America and the Mississippi Teacher Corps: “Issues like immigration, we may have some differing opinions on. On the whole, his speech was one that tried to bring Mississippians together.”
n Blake Wilson, executive director of the Mississippi Economic Council, the state chamber of commerce, said he was pleased Bryant endorsed MEC’s Blueprint Mississippi, a strategic plan for the state: “The consolidation of administrative functions of school districts, that’s been talked about. It’s a no-brainer. It’s time to move on and get that done.”
n Senate President Pro Tem Terry Brown, R-Columbus, praised Bryant’s focus on jobs: “Basically, these are things he pushed himself as lieutenant governor. I’m excited about getting a hand on budgeting and spending.”
