A Columbus man is home but not necessarily resting comfortably after shooting himself in the buttocks Friday night.
“He put his hand in his left pocket, and the gun went off,” Columbus Police Sgt. Ross Richardson said of the victim who was not charged.
The man was watching some men shoot dice on Marvin Street. At some point, he stuck the .32 caliber gun in his back pocket, Richardson said.
He was asked about the handgun, reached around and injured himself about 8:39 p.m.
The sergeant said the man drove himself to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle where the bullet was removed. He was sent home to recover.
The sound of silence
Columbus police are trying to find the man who drove away with a newly installed sound system.
Richardson said about $630 in vehicle audio equipment was stolen from Audio Advantage on Highway 45 North about 5:46 p.m. Friday.
“They didn’t even know the guy’s name,” the sergeant said.
Folks at Audio installed the equipment, Richardson said. The man came to pick up the car, said he was having trouble with it, went to the parking lot and drove away.
The vehicle was a 1985 to 1990 white, two-door Chevy Monte Carlo with red pinstripes.
Cruiser misses high-speed chase
A city police officer about to embark on hot pursuit Friday night found himself sitting by the side of the road, Richardson said.
The officer was running radar about 9:15 p.m. at the U.S. 82 bypass intersection of 18th Avenue and Highway 45. He saw a vehicle going by at about 80 mph. When the officer tried to follow, the car stalled.
It was towed.
