My wife and I returned to Columbus May 4th and 5th for the S. D. Lee High 50’s Reunion. What a delightful weekend with many classmates whom I had not seen since their graduation in 1950. Everything was planned so carefully to make sure that those of us who had been away from our hometown for many years could easily attend each event.
I want to thank Ann Champion Roberts (’53) and Jane Garton Smith (’52) and the other classmates who were involved in the planning of the events. The Cole family again allowed a lot of former Lee High folks to have a great evening at their cottage. They were very gracious and welcoming.
It was a lot of fun and brought back good memories of growing up in Columbus. I visited with football heroes I watched in the Magnolia Bowl, T. W. Lewis and Bobby Redwood.
Harold Goldstein, a 1950 graduate, who lived a block down Eighth Street from me, was there from Houston, Texas. Others traveled hundreds of miles to be there. If all of the local classmates from the classes of 1950 through 1955 had been there, it would have been a perfect weekend.
I remember Columbus as an ideal place to be a kid. We played football on Eighth Street in front of my house, rode motor scooters without helmets or a license, enjoyed dances and parties at the Y, Country Club, Elk’s Club and made lifetime friends.
T. W. Lewis mentioned that he thought the streets had become very narrow since he was growing up there. I agreed. Sometimes we remember things from our youth the way we wanted them to be, i.e. caught bigger fish, ran faster, etc.
The one constant to me is the friendships that were made from Franklin Academy through S. D. Lee High School.
