Since the beginning of time, man has pondered some profound, possibly unanswerable, questions. Even today, in the 21st century, there are inquiries so baffling that they remain a mystery. One example is: Which came first, the chicken or the egg? Or, have you ever wondered why humans continue to stare into the refrigerator, even though the contents do not magically evolve into something different? And, of course, there is the age-old query, do blondes really have more fun?
The answer to the chicken and egg controversy was purportedly unraveled by researchers at Sheffield and Warwick universities, in England, according to The Daily Mail (July 14, 2010).
“It had long been suspected that the egg came first, but now we have the scientific proof that shows that in fact the chicken came first,” said Dr. Colin Freeman, from Sheffield University’s Department of Engineering Materials.
I (who once flunked 10th grade science), disagree. I truly believe that evolution took place in the egg, making the resulting chick a bird of a different feather.
And what about refrigerators? A couple of centuries ago someone famous turned water into wine. Surely we have made progress since. It is only logical to expect a modern appliance to morph broccoli into ice cream, or leftovers into a feast from J. Broussard’s restaurant. Those gremlins who switch off the light when you close the refrigerator door must have some sorcery to use on the food. Ah, “hope springs eternal in the human heart” (Alexander Pope).
But, really, blondes truly seem to have more fun than some darker-haired beauties. Of course they deserve a few accolades, if not a bit if admiration, since fair-haired ladies are the brunt of many jokes. The old double standard is well entrenched here. You never hear jabs at blond men, only the women.
Dolly Parton spoke for all of us when she said, “I’m not offended by dumb blonde jokes because I know I’m not dumb … and I also know that I’m not blonde.”
In our area, there are so many blondes who are having a ton of fun. It seems that Carol Bray is the sort of lady who never misses anything. You will see her out with her husband, Mickey, at every event from open mic nights to the Roast ‘N’ Boast.
If you don’t know Judy White, then you should. She is a petite dynamo who is a fixture on the local music scene. We see her dancing at music events all over the Triangle. Judy has the best Facebook page, alerting us to wonderful concerts and music news of all sorts. Through the wizardry of technology her posts appear in my email. But please do not ask me to explain that.
Both of these blondes are energetic, cheerful and charming. They certainly seem to be having a grand time. So maybe this is a “chicken and egg” sort of quandary. Are they having a ball because they are out and about enjoying every entertainment the area has to offer? Or, is it that they are naturally fun, cheerful ladies, so they just love to have great experiences? Maybe we need a scientist to research this. Or, perhaps we could all color our hair and see what happens.
