HAMILTON --┬áThe Hamilton High School slow-pitch softball team had little trouble advancing in the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 2A North State playoffs Tuesday night.

Hamilton swept Hollandale Simmons 15-0 and 16-0 to win the first-round best-of-three series.

Still, veteran coach Lewis Earnest wants a much better effort Saturday when his team travels to East Union for a second-round encounter.

"We just were not very good offensively," Earnest said. "We had some hits drop in, but we didn't have that all-around solid offensive effort we will have to have to keep advancing. We did not have good at-bats. I am hoping we can pick it up a little bit."

Hamilton (21-5) had 15 total hits in each victory, both of which were shortened to five innings by the run rule.

In the opener, Taylor Hyland had three hits, including a home run. Cheyenne Logan added three hits, including a double. Addie Thompson and Myiah Dobbs each had multiple hits, while Alison Atkins added a double.

In the second game, Dobbs had three hits, including a pair of triples. Atkins added a single and triple, while Mary Willis hit two doubles and Jordyn Jackson hit two singles.

Atkins picked up both pitching wins.

"East Union will provide a much stiffer challenge," Earnest said. "We will have to a do better job in all phases of the game. It's good to win the first series, but we will have to step our game up Saturday."

East Union advanced with a 12-0, 26-0 sweep of Shelby Broad Street. In the second game, the Lady Urchins scored 23 runs in the first inning.
