Junior Auxiliary of Starkville invites cooks to enter their best chili in the first annual Chilifest in downtown Starkville Oct. 19.

Held from 5-8 p.m. on Main Street, between Lafayette and Jackson Streets, Chilifest is part of homecoming weekend festivities preceding Mississippi State's match-up against Middle Tennessee State University Oct. 20.

"Anyone is welcome to enter the chili cooking contest, including local restaurants, social clubs, businesses, civic groups, tailgating crews or individuals," noted event coordinator Mamie Kosko.

Entry fee for the contest is $50; all proceeds go toward the Starkville JA chapter's efforts to serve children in Oktibbeha County. Entry forms, which can be found at starkvilleja.org or at the Greater Starkville Development Partnership's site, starkville.org, will be accepted through Monday, Oct. 15. Chili is to be cooked off site and brought to the contest area, ready to be served.

For $5, the public can take part in the chili tasting and vote for favorites. Prizes will go to the winners. Live music and a children's village will be part of the event, and downtown businesses will be open for after-hours shopping. Chili tasting tickets can be bought at the GSDP, Thyme, Occasions or from any Starkville JA member.
