A new name for the Mississippi University for Women will be announced in August.
At a convocation at 8:30 a.m. on Aug. 10 in Nissan Auditorium, Claudia Limbert, MUW”s president, will tell faculty and staff which name the school will present to the College Board.
Based on input from the MUW Leadership Committee — comprising leaders of the MUW Staff Council, the MUW Faculty Senate, the MUW Foundation, the Student Government Association and the MUW Alumni Association — and the MUW Naming Committee, Limbert will select one of two possible names: Reneau University or Waverley University.
The name Welty University was struck from the list of candidates after Eudora Welty”s family “declined to agree to the use of her name by MUW,” according to a statement from the family and MUW.
