A 100,000-square-foot spec building owned by the county may soon be a small industrial development site. Although details about the project are sketchy due to a confidentiality agreement, the Lowndes County Board of Supervisors is working with the Golden Triangle Development Link and Golden Triangle Planning and Development to see the project through by applying for a Community Development Block Grant to help lure the potential business.
According to George Crawford Jr. of GTPD a grant of up to $1.2 million could be issued by the Mississippi Development Authority for the project.
“This is the spec building the county owns that is out at the industrial park,” Crawford said. “This grant will be for some things that need to be done to the building.”
Crawford said the money will help cover the cost of putting a floor in the building. The brick building also does not have an access road or plumbing. A minimal amount of electrical work will also have to be completed before a tenant can move into the building.
“There is definitely a company looking at the site,” Crawford said. “It could bring about 40 jobs to the area. Anything that can’t be squeezed into the grant money will be covered by the company.
During its Dec. 3 meeting, the board of supervisors voted to award the engineering contract on the building to Calvert Spradling Engineering of West Point. The board will vote on an architect for the project at its Dec. 14 meeting.
