A $1.2 million expansion project for Mississippi Steel Processing continues to be a top priority for the Lowndes County Board of Supervisors.
The board recently approved an environmental clearance which will be sent to Jackson for approval from several entities, including the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality. According to George Crawford of Golden Triangle Planning and Development, the expansion could create up to 40 additional jobs for the facility.
“This expansion is funded by a Community Development Block Grant,” Crawford said. “The expansion will add an access road to connect Mississippi Steel Processing with Airport Road. There will also be a loading pad constructed and the addition of a rail spur funded through the CDBG. This will be a good for Mississippi Steel as it will allow them to grow their business.”
Mississippi Steel Processing is located on the campus of Severstal in western Lowndes County. The company gets sheets of steel from Severstal and then flattens and shears the steel. It ships the shaped steel to customers within a 500 mile radius of the plant.
