STARKVILLE -- The new special events and projects coordinator clocked her first day on the job at the Greater Starkville Development Partnership on Tuesday.
Jennifer Prather, a Memphis native, has been in Starkville since 2002, when she came to school at Mississippi State.
Prather's husband, MSU Sports Turf Superintendent Bart Prather, has worked for the university for 15 years.
In addition to her role as special events and projects coordinator, Prather will serve as the chief marketing manager for the Starkville Community Market, which is now under control of the Starkville Main Street Association, an arm of the GSDP. Prather's position is a new position created by the GSDP.
"The market has such a great foundation and a basis to grow from," Prather said. "There are so many things we can do to really expand the population of the market and the people who actually come shop the market."
Prather said her main focus will be fostering the growth of the number of events the Partnership has established, from Business After Hours to the New South Weekend Series.
"We just want to continue to grow on that, and continue to make this a place that people want to spend their time," she said. "Just buying into the community like that."
Prather, who has worked previously with the GSDP, said coming back was a thrill. She also worked with the university for six years, where she gained event-planning experience in her department through different student leadership programs.
"I just loved that and I have really grown that with some community service I've done, so this was just a dream job for me to move into a role I was really excited about," she said.
