Guests will be treated to a performance by pianist Elena Klionsky on the campus of Mississippi University for Women Thursday, Feb. 14, at 7:30 p.m. in Kossen Auditorium, Poindexter Hall.
The free concert, sponsored by the Leslie F. Threadgill Lecture and Artist Series, is one of many events lined up for the inaugural celebration of Dr. James B. Borsig as the 14th president of Mississippi University for Women.
A native of Saint Petersburg, Russia, Klionsky began playing the piano at the age of 5 and gave her first public performance at the age of 6.
After moving with her family to the United States in 1974, she continued her studies at the Juilliard School, where she began at the Pre-College Division and subsequently earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees and was the recipient of the prestigious Petschek Scholarship.
Klionsky made her first appearance in Lincoln Center in New York with the National Music Week Orchestra as a high school student. She performed her recital debut in New York to a sold-out audience in the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. Klionsky made her professional orchestral debut performing before 15,000 people on the same bill as Itzhak Perlman with the Chattanooga Symphony under the baton of Vakhtang Jordania. She has returned to Chattanooga many times to sold-out audiences.
Her solo recitals, orchestral appearances, television and radio performances have taken her across the United States to Canada and Mexico and through Western Europe to Southeast Asia.
In Russia, she has performed with the leading orchestras including Moscow State Symphony, St. Petersburg Camerata, Ural Philharmonic Orchestra and Russian Federal Orchestra. She was the first foreigner ever to open the annual “Moscow Stars” Festival in the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory.
Her love of chamber music has taken has taken her on tours to Holland, Belgium, Italy and Canada. She has also performed Duo Piano concerts with Taiwanese pianist Virginia Wei-Tsen Shiao and recorded for Solaris Classics. She recorded American and Belgian contemporary repertoire for Belgian radio.
Klionsky lives with her family in New York City.
