There is nothing unusual about the Columbus Arts Council offering classes. But three new August offerings with an unconventional twist arrive soon at the non-profit Rosenzweig Arts Center in the center of historic downtown. Belly Dancing Bootcamp, a Juggling for Dummies workshop and free sketching sessions will take centerstage.
Sawa Miedziak, a native of Japan, who is also trained in hip-hop style dance, will teach the ancient and joyful art of belly dancing for three weeks beginning Aug. 19. Classes are Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and Thursdays from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The class fee is $10 per session, or $75 for all nine sessions. Attire is regular workout clothing. Men, women, boys and girls, all shapes and sizes, are welcome.
Juggling for Dummies
Brian Landis Folkins, an actor in the upcoming Tennessee Williams Tribute''s production of "A Streetcar Named Desire," is an avid performer of all types of physical comedy. He''ll conduct a workshop Saturday, Aug. 22, in Juggling for Dummies. Cost for the 9 a.m. to noon session is $75 and includes a set of handmade juggling balls.
Participants will have the opportunity to gain instruction in regular three-ball juggling, contact or single-ball juggling, Chinese Yo-Yo and stick juggling.
Come sketch with us
A new sketch group at the RAC begins Tuesday, Aug. 18, from 10 a.m. to noon. This casual forum for local artists to practice their craft offers creative mornings at no cost, other than a $5 weekly fee to cover the expense of a model. Workspace and a clothed model are provided. Participants should bring a sketch pad, drawing medium, easel and a ready smile for a fun morning of sketching with other area artists.
For more information on the classes, workshop or sketch group, contact the Arts Council at 662-328-2787.
