STARKVILLE – A look at sales tax figures released Friday by the city of Starkville shows revenues are down over the past year.
As of May, the most recent month for which figures were available, the city received $1,098,487.98 in sales tax. This compares to $1,239,757.53 reported by May 2008.
Revenues this year also are less than figures reported in 2006 and 2007. The city received $1,201,600.23 as of May 2007 and $1,140,073.14 by May 2006.
Starkville”s sales tax revenues are split up among five entities.
The city”s Visitors and Convention Council, which receives 15 percent of the sales tax revenue, received $164,773.20 as of this May, compared to $185,963.63 by May 2008.
The Parks and Recreation Commission gets 40 percent of the revenue and received $439,395.19 as of this May, compared to $495,903.01 at the same time last year.
The city keeps 10 percent and received $109,848.80, compared to $123,975.75 in 2008.
The Oktibbeha County Economic Development Authority, which gets 15 percent of the revenue, received $164,773.20 as of May, while last year by the same time it received $185,963.63.
Mississippi State University receives the final 20 percent of the sales tax revenue. As of May, the university received $219,697.60, compared to $247,951.51 by May 2008.
