A local man is in custody after fleeing from the Mississippi Highway Patrol and then running into a home on Bell Avenue in Columbus.
DeVegas James Liddell, 29 of 211 Military Chaple Road in Steens, was arrested Monday and charged with 12 offenses.
A trooper with MHP attempted to pull over Liddell’s light-colored Honda Accord on Highway 50 and Highway 82 near Dutch Village gas Station for a seatbelt violation. Liddell fled, leading the trooper on a chase through downtown Columbus. Liddell bailed from his car on Bell Avenue, jumping two fences and running into a home.
Back-up from the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Department arrived on the scene and the deputy and the trooper asked the home owner for permission to enter the home, where the suspect was discovered in the living room, lying on his stomach.
When searched, approximately five grams of marijuana was found in Liddell’s pocket.
He was charged with felony fleeing or eluding in a motor vehicle, misdemeanor possession of marijuana, driving under the influence/refusal to take a sobriety test, seatbelt violation and suspended driver’s license. He had outstanding warrants for felony sale of cocaine, felony sale of marijuana, two counts of disobeying a police officer and false information. Liddell has been arrested 10 times since 1997 with charges ranging from shoplifting, to armed car -jacking to motor vehicle theft.
He is currently in the custody of the Lowndes County Adult Detention center awaiting bond.
