STARKVILLE -- Agriculture experts at Mississippi State University say some 200 farmers in eastern Mississippi will feel the loss of a 300-foot-tall communications tower that was felled by a recent tornado.

A university news release says the tower in Noxubee County provided broadband internet and GPS signals that aided farmers with planting and chemical applications. Dennis Reginelli of the Mississippi State University Extension Service says the loss of the tower in the April 11 storm means farmers will have to concentrate harder to avoid waste that comes when they overlap or miss portions of a field.

Teletec Communications of Columbus owns the tower. Company co-owner Ralph McLain told the extension service that his company is examining salvage options and working to determine the best location for a replacement.
