A rose to all the mothers out there. This year marks the 99th anniversary of the official act of Congress that designated the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day. We assume it was legislation that passed unanimously. As we know, moms come in all shapes, sizes, ages. Some are moms to large broods, some are the mom of one. There are step-moms, foster moms, moms-in-law and mom who have adopted the role informally. In each case, they bring a unique form of love into the lives of their children. In ways big and small and often neglected, mothers make a difference. Thanks, Mom!
A rose to those charged with running the municipal elections around the Golden Triangle, especially those in Starkville, which has had to deal with a very delicate situation in a too-close-to-call race for Ward 2 councilman. While there are some residents who have been impatient for a winner to be declared in that race between incumbent Sandra Sistrunk and challenger Lisa Wynn, we applaud the caution employed here. The decision to bring in staff from the secretary of state’s office and be in contact with the attorney general’s office show that Starkville is committed to conducting the count of votes in a thorough, fair and impartial manner.
A rose to all of the candidates, especially first-time candidates, who chose to participate in local government by offering themselves as candidates. Even in defeat, the candidates, who stepped forward to ensure voters had a choice in determining who conducts our city business, have served their fellow citizens well.
A rose to P.K. Ravi, who is developing a bowling facility in the 27,000 square foot building formerly known as the Sack and Save grocery store. For years now, despite occupying a prime piece of real estate near the junction of Highway 82 and Highway 45, the property has lain vacant. The facility, which will also include a bar and grill, will also be used for birthday parties and social gatherings. These types of new development are a sign that the economy, which has been in a state of decline since 2008, is recovering. The arrival of a family-friendly facility only creates more reason for optimism.
A rose to all graduates of Mississippi University for Women and Mississippi State University, who walked in commencement exercises this weekend. We salute your achievement and are confident the success you have attained in your studies will be merely a foreshadowing of the accomplishment that lie ahead.
