JACKSON -- Mississippi wildlife officials say May and June are peak nesting months for birds and people should leave them alone.

The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks says some species, including wild turkeys and bobwhite quail, nest directly on the ground.

The news release says birds sometimes nest near roads, along field margins or near the edge of forests.

The agency says people should not disturb the nests if they come across them.

If possible, the agency recommends people not mow pastures until July 1.
