Business brief: Judge Houston honored

The Mississippi Bankruptcy Conference presented a $10,000 gift to the new University of Mississippi Business Law Institute in honor of former U.S. Judge David W. Houston. 


Houston retired from the bench earlier this year after a distinguished career in bankruptcy law and now practices law at Mitchell McNutt & Sams in Tupelo. He served as President of the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges and as a member of the Board of Directors of the American Bankruptcy Institute. He was appointed by U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist to membership on the Judicial Conference of the United States Budget Committee, where he served for 15 years. He is a faculty member and lecturer for the Federal Judicial Center; Memphis Bar Association; Tennessee Bar Association; West Texas Bankruptcy Conference; Southeastern Bankruptcy Law Institute and Mississippi Bankruptcy Conference. Houston served as a visiting bankruptcy judge in the Southern District of Mississippi; the Northern, Southern and Western Districts of Texas; and the Middle District of Louisiana. He received the Mississippi Bar Association Judicial Excellence Award in 2011.
