STARKVILLE — The Starkville High School football team showed its fans Thursday night what it can do in a one-hour scrimmage.
The scrimmage was part of “Meet the Players Night,” and Starkville High football coach Bill Lee was careful not to show too much because Noxubee County coach M.C. Miller was one of several coaches at the game.
The Yellow Jackets will take on the defending Class 4A state champions Aug. 21 in Macon.
“We just wanted to hit each other, have a little fun, and show the fans something,” Lee said. “We didn”t want to show that much, but we did want to hustle and give 100 percent.”
With only 58 players available, Lee wanted to get through the scrimmage without injuries.
Depth could be a factor for Starkville, especially on the offensive and defensive lines.
“We change dramatically when we take this front five out,” Lee said. “There”s a big difference. They”ve got to stay healthy, but our focus is just getting repetition. We saw what we needed to see.”
Lee said he was pleased with the play of sophomore defensive back Taego Catledge, who made a few sparkling plays on offense.
“When he gets the ball in his hands, he makes some good moves,” Lee said. “Now we”re just looking to work on blocking schemes and see if we can get it in his hands some.”
