Local residents and visitors will be treated to an annual fireworks show tonight at the Sportsplex.
The fireworks show begins at 9 p.m. and should last about 20 minutes, Starkville Parks and Recreation Director Herman Peters said.
Last year's event, he said, attracted about 5,000 people, and Peters expects similar crowds for today's event.
Festivities begin at 6 p.m. with jumpers and inflatables for kids, and then volunteers will hand out free hot dogs and beverages 30 minutes later. At 7 p.m., visitors can cool off with free ice cream.
Peters encourages visitors to bring lawn chairs and blankets for the event. Coolers are not allowed on the grounds during the event.
"We want everyone to come out and enjoy themselves," he said. "It's a nice, clean event the whole family can enjoy."
Residents and visitors should be mindful about the city's ordinance against public fireworks usage. Do not bring fireworks to the event. Fireworks displays are allowed in the outlying county area, but proper safety procedures should be followed.
The Starkville Sportsplex is located at 405 Lynn Lane.
