The Greater Columbus Civitan Club announces its new Community Service High School Scholarship. The $500 scholarship is open to any college-bound high school senior in Lowndes County with a record of community service.
The scholarship winner will have the full amount paid directly to the institution of higher learning he or she attends in the fall after senior year. The scholarship may be used only to pay for institutional expenses at the post-secondary school at which the applicant is a full-time student.
To apply, students should send a letter of interest and a short resume with academic information and community service. Applications should include a 250-500 word essay which discusses the applicant's community service, why community service is important, and what the applicant has gained from their community service. The deadline is November 1st. All materials should be sent to: Scholarship Committee Chair, Greater Columbus Civitan Club, 416 4th Ave. S., Columbus, MS 39701.
"This scholarship is an important part of recognizing the value of community service performed by young people in the community," remarked Club President Tom Velek.
Club member John Longmire added, "It is important to reward those within our community who commit time to helping others. As a community service organization, the Greater Columbus Civitans want to be a part of that recognition."
The organization's flagship project is the local TOP Soccer program which provides children and young adults with disabilities the ability to train for and play soccer. It also supports youth athletics in the Golden Triangle and sponsors community appreciation luncheons for educators, religious leaders and first responders. The club provides opportunities for personal development, networking and leadership opportunities.
