STARKVILLE -- The anticipation surrounding the Mississippi State football season generated a lot of positive energy Monday as students purchased a single-day record of more than 7,000 season tickets.

MSU football coach Dan Mullen, who visited several student organizations to promote the program, was pleased to hear about the response.

The athletic department confirmed a limit of 11,000 student tickets could be reached today.

The Bulldogs play a seven-game home schedule that includes five opponents ranked in The Associated Press Preseason Top 25, including No. 1 Florida on Oct. 24.

Mullen knows home schedule will be challenging, but stresses the importance of doing well in those games to win the Southeastern Conference''s Western Division.

"If we win all of our home games we''ve taken a great step in the right direction to reach our goal of Atlanta (the site of the SEC Championship game), especially with the strength of schedule we have at home," Mullen said.

n Quarterback joins program: MSU team spokesman Joe Galbraith confirmed Monday afternoon that quarterback Daniel Segall has ended a minor league baseball career and joined the Bulldogs as a walk-on.

Segall, from Greenwood, Ark., signed with the University of Miami out of high school and had verbally committed to Arkansas State.

As a junior at Greenwood (Ark.) High School, Segall rushed for 1,012 yards and 27 touchdowns and threw for 2,065 more yards and 20 touchdowns.
