Final approval sought for medical center's tax abatement

Starkville aldermen are expected to approve a tax abatement request Tuesday that exempts ad valorem property assessments Medical Development properties LLC's Premier Imaging facility up to 2020. 


This agenda item is one of several small-ticket items up for consideration by the city Tuesday. Aldermen are not scheduled to discuss or vote on major items. 


The property, located at Miss. Highway 182 near Stark Road, is eligible for an ad valorem exemption after renovations and equipment upgrades were completed in 2009. Medical Development Properties previously sought a tax waiver through the Mississippi Department of Revenue -- aldermen approved such a request in 2011 -- but the entity first declined the proposal and then reversed its decision.  


The property is assessed at $2.86 million after renovations. While ad valorem rates would be waived under the request, school tax collections remain untouched. 


In other business, the city is expected to accept the annual $10,000 pass-through grant for the Brickfire Project. The program provides after-school child care services, as well as summer activities, to the children of low-income parents and parents enrolled in local educational institutions or workforce training programs. The grant represents a partnership agreement between the Mississippi Department of Human Services and Starkville for Federal Child Development Funds. 


Aldermen will also consider: 


■ Replacing an almost-30 year old dump truck by purchasing a 2005 model from Lapine Sales for $29,500; 


■ Purchasing two Cisco 3850x network switches and module add-ons for Starkville Electric Department's data infrastructure at a cost of $19,560; 


■ And advertising for a vacant deputy court clerk position. The job is expected to pay $23,213.92-to-$30,449.09 annually.
