NATCHEZ — Low interest rates mean high grass at Natchez City Cemetery. People who paid for perpetual care are upset.
Melissa Cangemi, who owns four plots, said that when she visited her son’s grave on his birthday Oct. 2, grass along the trail was up to her knees. Her family has 12 in the area.
“We paid for perpetual care, and if this is perpetual care, what are you telling me we are paying for?” she said.
Money for perpetual care comes from interest on the cemetery’s perpetual care fund, said cemetery director Danny Brown.
“In the last four to six years since the economy took a dive, nobody is making any interest on anything, and when there is no interest to pull, I don’t have a revenue supply.”
