The Columbus-Lowndes Convention and Visitors Bureau Board of Directors will revisit its strategic plan today at 4 p.m.
Don Anderson of Destination Consultancy Group has met with members of the city and county tourism board twice to streamline ideas and organize them into a set of long-term objectives -- once at the board's annual retreat in July and again last month. He also met with local business representatives in September for their input. During that time, they presented a list of challenges facing Columbus and Lowndes County with bringing in visitors who will stay overnight as well as some marketing and branding strategies that could be implemented to address the challenges. He held a follow-up session with them today at the Trotter Convention Center.
He will meet with the CVB board during its meeting this afternoon.
Anderson told board members last month he would contact them individually for their insight and would gather all the ideas and streamline them into a manageable list of realistic goals for the CVB as it moves forward.
CVB executive director Nancy Carpenter said now that Anderson has interacted with both board members and the community and gained a knowledge of the state of tourism in Columbus, she believes there will be a tangible plan members can discuss and possibly take action on today. Part of what could be changed includes some advertising tweaks. Carpenter said several participants at the community meeting last month suggested moving away from the current slogan for the Visit Columbus campaign, which is "The city that has it all," and considering taglines that speak more specifically to Columbus tourism events, such as the MLK Dream 365 festival.
