Jealous to speak at Miss. NAACP meeting

October 28, 2013 9:50:35 AM

JACKSON -- NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Jealous, who stepping down at the end of the year, will address the Mississippi NAACP's 68th Annual State Convention in Jackson.

When he was hired for the job in 2008, Jealous became the group's youngest-ever leader at the age of 35.

Under Jealous, the group worked to abolish death-penalty laws in at least four states, opposed "stop-and-frisk" police tactics and stand-your-ground laws following the death of Florida teenager Trayvon Martin and embraced gay rights in an historic 2012 vote. Donations have also increased.

Jealous will speak at the Mississippi NAACP's Freedom Fund Awards Banquet at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 9 at the Jackson Convention Center.

The annual meeting begins Nov. 7 and ends Nov. 10.
