David Creel -
It's that time of year for cult movies such as "Night of the Living Dead" and "A Nightmare on Elm Street," and even I have been known to sink down into the sofa, waiting for Jason to scare the living daylights out of me. Well, I'm no screamer, but the horror of hair gone wrong haunts me more than Norman Bates in "Psycho."
Even I have my own bad hair flashbacks. One was my ninth-grade curly perm; another was the punk Mohawk. What was I thinking? For many of you, I'm sure it was when the perfect Jennifer Aniston blonde turned into an orangey-red scare, or perhaps the oh-too-short cut that kept you in hats throughout the summer, hurriedly waiting for Christmas to come with a few inches of new growth from Santa. We have all heard it before: "it's only hair" or "it'll grow out." Well, tell that to someone with a good haircut!
Hair is that one accessory we cannot part with. It follows us everywhere we go. Nothing can spoil your mood and send you into your own horror scene faster than a bad hair day. Make that an even worse hair month, and you've just been cast as the lead in an emotional screamer.
In my20-something years behind the chair, I have heard what my mama would call some "doozies" of hair horror stories. Once a would-be blonde I met had been through 17 colors in one month. Yes, you read that correctly. It's no tall tale. It's a wonder her hair had not melted like the witch in "The Wizard of Oz." The stories go on and on about botched bobs, crooked bangs, Bozo the Clown perms and monstrous colors. I'm never shocked when a new guest begins to take me down memory lane. In fact, most often I'm amused because it often could have been avoided.
Some advice for those who are scarred by the hair horrors of your past: avoid the temptation to be impulsive. When trying a new hairstyle, bring along photos and encourage your stylist to speak your language rather than professional jargon. Good communication is key.
Now, I'm going to hide behind my Great Dane Naomi, covered in pillows, and watch another episode of "American Horror Story" because it's scary and because Jessica Lange has very good hair!
